The Lyon's First Choice - Sara Adrien (Dragonblade Pub - Jan 2024)

Series: Lyon's Den (Book 51)

Do you want to know why Mrs. Dove-Lyon devoted her life to making love matches? Had love’s first choice been hers, the Black Widow wouldn’t exist today. Haunted by specters from her past, can she spin a safety net for impossible love?

Step into Harley Street’s world of medical miracles, where Dr. Phil Rosen excels in surgery but struggles to mend his broken heart. Could the Black Widow lead a brave nurse to his rescue?

Meet Nurse Shira, a woman of courage who dared to defy societal norms by choosing a career over reputation. Her journey leads her to the bustling clinic on Harley Street, where destiny intertwines her path with the dashing surgeon who saved her friend’s life. In his presence, she discovers that her passion for medicine has guided her straight into the arms of love.

In a story where the lines mustn’t be crossed between a surgeon and his nurse, Mrs. Dove-Lyon teaches a lesson on embracing taboos to find love. Join the story that unveils the drive of London’s most notorious matchmaker and witness the love match she forges like no other.

Intriguing story. Dr. Phil Rosen is a Jewish surgeon who leaves Vienna for London to pursue his career in a less restrictive environment. He is also fleeing his mother's and grandmother's attempts to find him a wife.

Shira also leaves her small community to pursue her calling as a nurse. The rules there are far more rigid, and a friend's offer of employment promises greater flexibility. The only thing that has Shira concerned is the potential for her reputation to be ruined. But when she thinks about it, she feels her nursing is more important, and she gives up any dream of being a wife and mother.

The first meeting between Phil and Shira is intense, as they treat an emergency at their friends' office. Their professional connection and teamwork are immediate and undeniable. I loved how quickly Phil recognized and respected Shira's ability, something she had not experienced before. As they work closely together, feelings develop, but neither is willing to cross that line. I ached for both, as neither could see a way for them to be together.

The patient that Phil and Shira helped on that first day was none other than Mrs. Dove-Lyon. There is an unexpected link between her and Phil. This look into her past explains how she got into matchmaking. A conversation between Bessie and Phil reveals how family history has influenced Phil's views on love and marriage. Bessie is also interested in Shira, who is less than pleased by the matchmaker's attention. As always, the notorious Black Widow has a plan, and her machinations ensure Phil and Shira spend plenty of time together. Her method of bringing them together was unique, effective, and emotional. The epilogue was excellent, with a twist at the end that surprised me.

I enjoyed the look into Jewish traditions and their effects on Phil and Shira. They are proud of their heritage but frequently frustrated by the rules that hold them back. I was also intrigued by the medical aspects, especially regarding Ada's labor and delivery.
