Artists, writers and musicians have paid homage to mothers and in this challenge I hope we can look at some of their tributes as we come up to Mothers Day.

1. Whistler's mother
Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, best known under its colloquial name Whistler's Mother or Portrait of Artist's Mother. It is a painting in oils on canvas created by the American-born painter James McNeill Whistler in 1871. The subject of the painting is Whistler's mother, Anna McNeill Whistler. It is held by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, having been bought by the French state in 1891.

2. The Child's Bath
The Child’s Bath, oil-on-canvas painting created in 1893 by American artist Mary Cassatt during her mature period. The work depicts an intimate and tender moment between a woman and a child without indulging in excessive sentimentality. Like much of Cassatt’s work in the early 1890s, The Child’s Bath combines the techniques of her fellow Impressionists with the aesthetics of Japanese printmaking.

3. Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California
Migrant Mother is a photograph taken in 1936 in Nipomo, California, by American photographer Dorothea Lange during her spell at the Resettlement Administration. Since then, the photograph has become an icon of the Great Depression and has been reproduced to serve as advertisements and much more.

4. Ritratto della madre
Portrait of Artist's Mother is an 1888 painting by Vincent van Gogh of his mother, Anna Carbentus van Gogh, drawn from a black-and-white photograph. Van Gogh's introduction to art was through his mother, herself an amateur artist. After years of strained relations with family members, Van Gogh excitedly shared some of his works he thought his mother would appreciate most, of flowers and natural settings. In this painting, Van Gogh captures his mother's dignified and proud nature.

5. Camille Monet and Child – Claude Monet
One of the most famous paintings that focuses on a mother and child is credited to Monet. This work is titled Camille Monet and Child and was completed in 1875. The painting depicts Monet’s wife and a child.

1. I'll Always love my Mama The Intruders
"I'll Always Love My Mama" is a 1973 single by the Philly soul group The Intruders. Released from their album Save the Children, the single is a song commonly played on Mother's Day.
The song was inspired by Kenny Gamble's mother, Ruby, who died in 2012.

6. The Beatles Julia
"Julia" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). It is performed as a solo piece by John Lennon. The song was written by Lennon (though credited to Lennon–McCartney) about his mother Julia Lennon, who died in 1958 at age 44.

7. Blake Shelton: The Baby
The song describes how a mother thinks of her children, especially the narrator who is the youngest child in his family, and tells of various situations where he is referred to as "the baby". Later on, the narrator tells of receiving a telephone call to come to the family's home in Louisiana, where his mother is dying however, he arrives shortly after she is pronounced dead. Her son says " And cried just like a baby."

8. “The Wish” by Bruce Springsteen
“The Wish” is a moving tribute to a mother because a specific experience from Bruce Springsteen's life inspired it. Growing up, Springsteen’s family didn’t have much money, so his desire to have a guitar as a child seemed like nothing more than a wish. Despite this, his loving mother continued saving until she could finally afford to give her son the gift that would lay the foundation for his musical career.

9. Mama, I’m Coming Home” by Ozzy Osbourne

She was always there for him, even in his darkest moments. Mothers are the first teachers, friends, and role models for their children. They make sacrifices and provide unconditional love that is often taken for granted.

10. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” by Glen Campbell
