Series: Honey Acres (Book 3)
Can best friends become something even better?
Coming home to Honey, Texas, for her aunt's wedding
should be a joyful experience, but Rosemary Hill's heart is low. She's lost
funding for her bee genomics project and has been betrayed by her trusted
mentor. Reuniting with Everett, her best friend, helps take the sting out.
Soon, Rosemary is helping Everett plan bee-friendly park events -- and getting
oddly jealous when he's pursued by her high school nemesis.
Honey's most eligible bachelor has a secret -- he's loved
Rosemary for as long as he can remember. Everett always hesitated to risk their
friendship by asking for more, but at last he's ready. That is, until Rosemary
is offered her dream job. What kind of best friend would ask her to give that
up? Or perhaps the butterflies they're both feeling mean something has changed
-- in the sweetest possible way…
Good book. Rosemary came home to Texas for her aunt's
wedding but is staying to decide about her future. The bee genome project she
worked on in California lost its funding and, adding insult to injury, her
mentor and team lead claimed her research as his own. She's happy to be home in
her family's loving and supportive arms and to spend time with her best friend,
Everett.
Everett stayed in Honey and is now the parks and rec
director, as well as backup for the mayor. He has also been named the town's
most eligible bachelor, further complicating his life. He's happy Rosemary is
back but also concerned about keeping his stronger feelings for her a secret.
I enjoyed watching the development of the relationship
between Rosemary and Everett. They've always been friends who could tell each
other anything. However, Everett has been in love with Rosemary for years but
doesn't want to say anything and ruin their friendship. Rosemary always considered
Everett her friend, so why did she suddenly notice him as a man? I loved
watching them spend time together. Rosemary is determined to help Everett in
her new job as an event planner, even if it means dealing with her high school
bully, Libby. Everett's support of Rosemary when she encountered her old
boss/mentor at the bee convention was outstanding. Unexpected opportunities give
Rosemary something to consider, and Everett must decide if he wants to speak
up. I liked the ending and seeing them finally talk to each other about their
feelings instead of assuming they know what is best for the other person.
There was a side story about a group of paintballers
going around and vandalizing towns in the county. For some reason, many people
seemed to think it was Everett's job to stop them. I could feel his frustration
each time they struck. The resolution was about what I expected.
I loved the part about the alphabet book that Rosemary
wrote and illustrated for Bea and Nova. The children's joy in the book was
infectious, and Everett's reading was adorable. I would love to see that book
published for real.

The Kiss That Made Her a Countess - Laura Martin (HH #1803 - July 2024)
Series: Season of Celebration (Book 3)
One impulsive kiss…
His countess for life!
Desperate to step into Society just once before she's
forced into an unhappy marriage, Alice sneaks into a masquerade ball…only to
catch a dashing stranger's eye! He's also determined to be distracted from his
troubles, and Alice can't resist ending their enchanting evening with a kiss.
But the next day, when he comes to warn her that their encounter was observed,
she learns he's the Earl of Northumberland…and the only way to save her
reputation is to become his convenient countess!
When faced with the prospect of marrying her vile cousin
Cecil, the ordinarily cautious Alice joins her friend Lydia in sneaking into a
neighbor's masquerade ball. She encounters Simon, Earl of Northumberland, who
saves her from an embarrassing mishap. They dance, they talk, and, during a
stroll in the garden, engage in an ill-advised kiss before Alice runs off.
Unfortunately, they were seen, and rumors began to circulate. Simon does the
honorable thing and proposes.
Simon never intended to marry. He inherited the title
after his older brother's sudden death, a death very much like their father's. He
suffers from the same kind of headaches they did and is convinced that he will
also die young. Rather than put his family through seeing that happen, Simon
plans to leave the country and go off to die alone. But he won't leave Alice to
suffer the consequences of their actions, so he marries her first. It will be a
marriage in name only, and when he is dead, she will be free to pursue the love
she craves.
They marry, and Simon leaves within days. Alice is left
to build her own life, which she does. Meanwhile, Simon has been off in Italy,
waiting to die, only to find that the headaches have stopped. When a doctor
tells him there's no reason to believe he will die soon, Simon goes home to
England and the wife he has ignored for almost a year. Alice is stunned by his
arrival but hopeful that her marriage will become real.
I liked Alice. She is kind, compassionate, and
determined. I loved how she moved to London and made a life for herself, making
friends and finding a purpose that satisfied her. The scenes of her working
with her charity were terrific.
I had a harder time liking Simon. His grief over his
father's and brother's deaths was understandable, and I ached for him because
of the guilt he felt for being alive. But after a while, I felt he was using it
as an excuse to avoid getting close to Alice.
The development of Simon and Alice's relationship was
frustrating at times. Alice is wary of letting herself grow close to Simon
because she isn't sure he won't run again. But the more time they spend
together, the more she sees the man he could be. Simon is attracted to Alice
but tries to resist. He is also fascinated by her. But his survivor's guilt is
so intense that every time he starts to feel that he could be happy, he pulls
away, hurting Alice in the process. I loved seeing Alice finally call Simon out
on it and its effect on him. The ending was emotional, and the epilogue was a
nice wrap-up to their story.
His countess for life!

A Colton Kidnapping - Justine Davis (HRS #2283 - July 2024)
Series: Coltons of Owl Creek (Book 6)
A marriage of convenience
…to protect two small children from danger.
They had nothing in common -- Briony, a shy accountant,
and Greg, a gruff Colton rancher. But after the death of their two best
friends, Briony and Greg become uneasy guardians of the couple's two children.
When the children's dangerous grandfather tries to gain custody, the two new
parents know they must get married to protect their found family. Can Briony
and Greg save the children -- and also their hearts -- as they grow closer
together?
Good addition to the series. In this book, we have Greg
Colton, the oldest of the Colton siblings, and Briony Adams, a shy, loner
accountant, who are the best friends of Rick and Wendy Kraft. In a shocking
development, Rick and Wendy are killed in a car accident, leaving Greg and
Briony as co-guardians of the Kraft's two children, Justin and Jane. Stunned by
their friends' deaths, Greg and Briony vow to do their best to care for the
kids.
Becoming the children's guardians causes radical changes
in Greg and Briony's lives. I loved seeing them work together to make the kids'
lives go as smoothly as possible. I liked that each paid attention to the
other's ideas and preferences. Their teamwork was excellent and helped overcome
some of the awkwardness of living together. Neither expected the sparks of
attraction that flared between them. Though Rick and Wendy had frequently
attempted to push Greg and Briony together, neither felt that they had enough
in common to make a relationship work. But the more time they spent together,
the stronger the attraction grew.
When Rick's despicable father sues for custody of the
children (and their inheritances), Greg and Briony realize they have a better
chance of foiling his plans if they are married. They agree to a marriage of
convenience to ensure they present a united front. I liked seeing them get to
know each other better and appreciate their differences and similarities. They
are just starting to explore their growing feelings when a dangerous situation intensifies
their emotions.
The suspense of the story was good. When Rick's will clarifies
that his father is never allowed near the children, Greg and Briony are
determined to carry out his wishes. The hint of trouble comes when they realize
they are being watched. The tension ramps up when Mr. Kraft sues for custody. I
was glued to the pages when the children disappeared, knowing the likely culprit
was him. I could feel their worry and fear as they and the entire town joined
the search. The final confrontation was a nail-biter, and I was on the edge of
my seat until it was all over.
I loved the support that Greg and Briony received from the
Colton family. Greg's father, Buck, and his Aunt Jen are fantastic in helping
take care of Justin and Jane. I loved the immediate response when the kids
disappeared. For Briony, who grew up in foster care, the closeness of the
Colton family was an eye-opener and life-changing experience.
…to protect two small children from danger.

The Duke's Mercenary - C.H. Admirand (Dragonblade - June 2024)
Series: Duke's Guard (Book 9)
Dermott O'Malley, The Duke's Mercenary, expects trouble
but not the lovely lass perched on the stone wall, arms spread, prepared to
jump. He calls out a warning, and rushes to save her as she falls.
Caught in his arms, she opens her eyes, unable to tear
her gaze from the devastatingly handsome man with the brilliant green eyes
hovering above her. She blinks. Who is he? Her heart begins to pound…. Dear
Lord, who is she?
The nameless woman captures Dermott's heart, but trouble
follows her from London.
As the threat against the lass with no memory increases,
Dermott's vow to protect her with his life is called to action until he
realizes the only way to truly protect the lass is to marry her. But will the
brave lass trust him with her heart and her love?
Danger stalks in the night, but it will have to get past
The Duke's Mercenary before he will let harm come to those he has sworn to
protect with his strength, his honor, and his heart.
Another terrific entry into the Duke's Guard series. Dermott
is one of the sixteen handsome, protective Irishmen who work for the Duke of Wyndmere,
guarding his immediate and extended families. I love these men who are tough on
the outside but have an inner softness brought out by the women they fall for.
The story opens with Georgiana Eggerton discovering that
her father has gambled away their homes, his fortune, her dowry, and her hand
in marriage to the vile Viscount Trenchert. Devastated by what happened, he suspects that the Viscount cheated and challenges him to a duel, but he also
knows that Georgiana is in danger. He quickly sends Georgiana off to the
country, telling her to seek assistance from the Earl of Lippencott.
Dermott is making his rounds of the Earl's property when
he spies a beautiful young woman about to jump from a wall. He races toward her
but isn't in time to catch her. He scoops up her unconscious body and races for
the manor, all the time worrying about her, wondering who she is and what she is
running from. His protective instincts are aroused, as is his heart, and
something in him says, "Finders keepers - she's mine."
Matters become complicated when Georgiana regains consciousness
but can't remember who she is or what she is running from. Dermott vows to
protect her, as do his fellow Guard members and the Earl himself. But it is
Dermott who has Georgiana's complete trust.
I loved watching the relationship develop between Georgiana
and Dermott. As her memories return, the danger she is in becomes clear. I
enjoyed seeing Dermott's protectiveness combine with the tender feelings that
were new to him. Georgiana's feelings for Dermott grow the more time she spends
with him. But she is no frail flower, and there are times when her strength of
will runs up against Dermott's stubbornness, and sparks fly. The tension ramps
up as the viscount attempts to claim his prize, but the Duke's Guard members
thwart him. Meanwhile, Dermott comes up with the perfect plan to put Georgiana
out of the viscount's reach. I liked that neither took long to admit their
feelings, and there were no misunderstandings to keep them apart.
The confrontations with the viscount were intense and
exciting. It's always fun to see the feisty Guard members have to rein in their
more violent instincts to adhere to their employers' rules of engagement. However,
I found the final confrontation with the viscount a little anti-climactic, as I
would like to know what happened to him.
As always, I love the interactions among the men of the
Duke's Guard. The brothers and cousins always have each other's backs, but they
do not hesitate to roast each other whenever they feel like it. It was entertaining
to see Dermott on the receiving end of post-marriage teasing and the payback
from the others.

The Lyon and the Rose of Mayfair - Aviva Orr (Dragonblade - June 2024)
Series: Lyon's Den (Book 58)
Can Charlotte and Hugh's love survive a family feud?
Charlotte Rose will settle for nothing less than true
love. But how is she to find it amongst the ton where suitors compete to win
her hand like a prized trophy? Dubbed 'the Rose of Mayfair' for her
extraordinary beauty, Charlotte has low expectations as she prepares to enter
her third Season. But her focus changes when her father's nemesis returns to
London, and an old feud reemerges, affecting her adored papa's health and
throwing their happy home into turmoil. Charlotte will do anything to end the
feud and restore her papa to his genial self—even if it means consorting with
his enemy's son.
Hugh Warsham is nothing like his father, a hot-tempered
general who spent much of his life in military combat. Determined not to follow
in his footsteps, Hugh studies to be a barrister but finds the work tedious and
the long hours torturous. Reprieve comes in the form of an unexpected
inheritance. With his newfound fortune, Hugh starts to frequent the Lyon's Den,
delighting in the freedom denied to him in his previous life.
But, aware that Mrs. Dove-Lyon, proprietor of the
infamous gaming den, seeks to entrap wealthy bachelors into marriage, he is
cautious not to fall into her spider's web—until she plants a rose in his path
and temptation becomes too great to resist.
Good book with a feeling of Romeo and Juliet. Charlotte
and Hugh are the children of two men who have been feuding for twenty-five
years. Charlotte is a beautiful woman preparing to begin her third Season. She
wants to marry for love, the way her parents did. But the contenders for her
hand aren't interested in her, just winning the "Rose of Mayfair."
Hugh is the son of a British general who has served in India until recently.
Hugh was studying the law but hated it. He gained reprieve when he received an
inheritance from his grandfather. He has been enjoying himself with visits to
the Lyon's Den.
But General Warsham's return to London stirred up the
feud between him and Charlotte's father. Both stubbornly cling to the feud and
refuse to end it. The men's wives have remained friends over the years and will
do anything to end the conflict. They concoct the idea of matching Hugh and Charlotte
and turn to Mrs. Dove-Lyon for help.
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Charlotte
and Hugh. He is immediately intrigued by Charlotte and can't resist getting to
know her better, even though he knows Mrs. Dove-Lyon's reputation for
matchmaking. They connect easily and quickly, including sparks of attraction. That
attraction flares up during one of their meetings, resulting in an awkward
situation. Their relationship is complicated by the interference of a rejected
suitor, putting Charlotte in danger. The last part of the book was intense with
Hugh's race to the rescue, a life-threatening injury, and some interesting family
dynamics.
The epilogue was a good wrap-up and gave a peek into
their future.

15 Summers Later - RaeAnne Thayne (Canary Street Press - June 2024)
15 summers ago, everything changed…
Ava Howell seemed to have it all. She moved away from
Emerald Creek, Idaho, married the love of her life and published a bestselling
memoir. But she never expected that her husband would feel so betrayed by a
secret from her past -- the truth of what happened to her and her sister all
those years ago -- that he'd walk away. Now Ava is back home and trying to move
on with the only person who can truly understand…
Following years of healing, Madison Howell is finally
happy. After college she built a no-kill shelter where she works with animals
every day, and she's in love with the town veterinarian, Dr. Luke Gentry. But
she can't ever bring herself to tell him. Years ago, his dad died protecting
Madi and her sister, so how could he ever love her back?
With the truth laid bare, and the past that Ava and
Madison have worked so hard to leave behind threatening everything they have
built for themselves, the Howell sisters' reunion is bittersweet. And as Ava
and Madi attempt to remedy the rifts in their lives and reconcile their
futures, they must face the demons of their past together.
Good story about two sisters who survived a traumatic
event as teenagers and how it continues to affect their lives. The story is
told from Ava and Madi's points of view, supplemented by that of Luke, who was
also a participant in the event that changed all their lives.
The story opens with Ava. She moved away from Emerald
Creek, married a man she adores, and made a career as a middle school English
teacher. But haunted by the events of that long-ago summer, she writes about it
as part of her therapy. She later expands her writing into her master's thesis
and eventually into a bestselling book. However, the book's publication strains
Ava's marriage as she had never shared many of those experiences with her
husband, Cullen. Hurt by what he feels is her lack of trust, Cullen uses an archaeological
dig to distance them while he deals with his feelings. Ava is devastated by his
departure and plans to spend the summer in Emerald Creek with her grandmother.
She also hopes to mend the rift with her sister, Madi, caused by the book's
publication.
Madi has tried to put the events of that summer behind
her despite the physical and mental scars. She followed her dream of helping
animals, first by becoming a vet tech and now by opening the Emerald Creek
Animal Rescue, a no-kill shelter. She's not happy about Ava's book. Madi
doesn't understand why Ava brings up those terrible memories and worries about
how people will look at her now. Her friendship and working relationship with
Luke is vital to her, as he never treats her as though she were broken. Her
feelings for Luke are stronger than friendship, but because his father died
while protecting Madi and Ava, she doesn't believe anything can come of them.
Luke is an all-around nice guy. A widower with a teenage
daughter, he is also the town veterinarian. He volunteers his services to
Madi's shelter. I loved how well he understood Madi and her fears and didn't
treat her differently than anyone else. He doesn't expect the chemistry that
flares between them and hesitates to pursue it because he doesn't want to ruin their
friendship.
A lot is going on in this book, but the central theme is
the relationship between Madi and Ava. Madi is so angry at Ava's publication of
their ordeal that she can barely stand to be in the same room with her. She
doesn't understand why everyone is so interested in what happened and hates
feeling like the center of attention. I got a little frustrated with her
refusal to read the book and maybe get an idea of its appeal. I wanted to lock
the two in a room until they talked everything out. It doesn't help that Ava also
keeps a secret that could further affect their relationship. Their relationship
is a roller coaster of ups and downs as each gains a little empathy with the
other's feelings. A crisis at the end is a make-or-break point.
We also have a rocky relationship between Ava and Cullen.
I understood Cullen's hurt at Ava's keeping the details of her past from him.
But I could also see Ava's need to be seen for herself, not as a product of her
past. Through it all, there was no question about their love for each other; it
was mainly a matter of restoring trust. An unexpected event boosts their
efforts, but will it be enough? Their story was heartbreaking, heartwarming, and
emotional.
The development of the relationship between Madi and Luke
was a slow growing one. They've been friends since that devastating day fifteen
years ago. We see plenty of camaraderie and ease with each other as they work
with the animals and during their other interactions. But two years after the
death of his wife, Luke suddenly discovers his feelings for Madi have changed.
There were a couple of heated kisses that they backed away from before
realizing their feelings for each other were reciprocated. I loved the final
push that brought them together.
The epilogue was terrific.

The Love Shack - Lori Foster (Canary Street - June 2024)
Series: Indiana Summers (Book 3)
They've been trying to avoid each other.
But this town has other ideas…
When Berkley Carr opened The Love Shack Animal Haven, she
thought she'd finally put her past behind her. But sometimes she feels the
sting of the scandal from her youth, especially when she keeps crossing paths
with her handsome neighbor. So, she keeps her head down and pours all her love
into caring for animals.
Lawson Salder moved to Cemetery, Indiana, to escape from
the grinding poverty of his childhood. He barely knew Berkley from their old
neighborhood, but every time he sees her, the shame and pain come crashing
back. He knows she's got major baggage of her own. They're better off just
avoiding each other.
But that's downright impossible in a town full of
matchmaking busybodies. Then there's the hard-to-ignore attraction they feel
every time they see each other. When the universe is conspiring to bring them
together, will Berkley and Lawson let past hurts go and embrace the love they
deserve?
Good book about love, friendship, starting over, and
letting go. This is the third book in the Indiana Summers series. I haven't
read the first two, and this book easily reads as a stand-alone. We have a
two-for-one romance and four people who have come to Cemetery to escape their
pasts and start over.
Berkley grew up in a poor neighborhood in a small town in
Kentucky. She left town under a scandal that was no fault of hers but has
affected how she sees herself. She has a new life running the Love Shack Animal
Haven, where she pours all the love in her heart into the animals she cares
for. However, the fallout from that past makes her wary of getting close to
anyone, so she tends to keep to herself. She's shocked when someone from her
hometown also moves to Cemetery, raising fears that her past will come to
light.
Lawson grew up in poverty with awful parents. He left as
soon as he could and traveled the world, seeing the good and the bad of people
everywhere. He settled in Cemetery and opened a t-shirt printing business. He
was surprised to see Berkley, who he knew when they were younger. He feels
guilty that he didn't do anything to help her back in the day.
I enjoyed seeing the relationship develop between Berkley
and Lawson. They initially planned to avoid each other, but it is a small town,
and they live close to each other. Their early interactions are facilitated by Berkley's
pets - Hero, the overprotective rescue dog, and Cheese, the klepto-kitty. I
loved the background stories of these two animals and how they came to live
with Berkley. I laughed out loud whenever Cheese would steal something from
Lawson's (usually laundry) and hide it at Berkley's, necessitating Lawson to retrieve
it. He earned big brownie points with Berkley and me and with his kindness and
understanding toward her pets.
I liked how easy it was for Berkley to connect with
Lawson since she had nothing to hide from him. He already knew about her past. They
quickly developed a strong friendship, and it wasn't long before sparks of
attraction flared between them. I liked the slow build from friends to more, allowing
each to deal with their pasts. I loved Lawson's protectiveness and support when
Berkley's past threatened to wreck her new life. The ending was great.
A secondary romance developed between two other
newcomers. Lark owns the local hair salon. She also came to Cemetery to escape
the trauma and memories of the past. She is bubbly, outgoing, and determined to
get to know everyone in town. She and Berkley bond quickly, forming a deep
friendship that fills a hole neither realized they had. I loved seeing Lark
zero in on Oliver, another newcomer, who seems serious and standoffish. She is
determined to get him to lighten up. Oliver, a former physical therapist, came
to Cemetery to escape a toxic situation with his family. He is opening a
fitness center. The first meeting between the two was fun to watch as Lark
smashes through his aloofness. Their relationship was also fun to follow.
Two other characters played significant parts in the
book. The first is Betty Cemetery, the town matriarch and descendant of the
town's founder. She is deeply immersed in everything that goes on in
"her" town and doesn't hesitate to interfere if she sees the need. I
loved how she took Berkley under her wing and became like a surrogate
grandmother to her. Her support and belief in Berkley go a long way toward rebuilding
Berkley's confidence.
The other character is the town mascot, a mannequin named
Kathleen. Kathleen appears in various locations, but no one knows who is behind
it. Lawson is initially creeped out by her, and it is especially funny to see some
of the goings on as someone takes advantage of that. I laughed out loud at some
of the antics and enjoyed seeing Lawson slowly join in the fun. I loved seeing
Lawson, Berkley, Lark, and Oliver join together in a special Kathleen event.
But this town has other ideas…

Three Cowboys and a Bride - Kate Pearce (Zebra - May 2024)
Series: Three Cowboys (Book 3)
Everybody knows a real cowboy doesn't back down from a
challenge—even when that means playing the part of devoted husband to your
wayward estranged wife so she can collect her inheritance…
Cowboy Max Romero is a married man—even if he hasn't seen
his bride since their impulsive Reno wedding. When the seriously sexy Brit
Phoebe Creighton-Smith suddenly shows up in his life again, the last thing he
expects is a request to play man-and-wife in front of her family. But it sounds
like a challenge to the mischievous Max, who offers Phoebe one in return—give
up proper English etiquette for riding the range like a real rancher's woman.
Phoebe is willing to rope a stallion, if it means she can
convince her grandmother to release the trust fund she's entitled to after
marriage. She'll just have to pretend that her deliciously brawny "husband"
isn't tempting her to total abandon every minute of every day—and night. But
just when the heat between them crackles into a blaze, Phoebe's snobby clan
forces Max to make a choice, he knows he'll risk everything to convince her
that with them, true love is a sure thing . . .
Good wrap-up to the series. The story begins with a
prologue, spelling out how Phoebe and Max ended up married. Phoebe, a British
woman trying to wrest her inheritance from her uncooperative family, needs a
husband to fulfill the requirements. Max, a Marine between deployments, draws
her attention in a Reno bar. Something about him leads her to propose a
marriage-of-convenience arrangement, and Max, who is always game for a
challenge, jumps right in. But Max disappeared the next day without leaving
contact information.
Four years later, Phoebe tracks Max down at the
California ranch where he works with his two Marine friends, Luke and Noah. He
never told them about Phoebe, so everyone is shocked that he is married. Phoebe
still needs Max's help, and asks him to continue in the role to convince her
family. Neither expected the sparks of attraction that rekindled from their
wedding night. I loved seeing Max and Phoebe get to know each other as she
settled into her temporary stint as a ranch wife. The more time they spend
together, the deeper their connection and feelings grow. Some wonderful scenes
highlight how good they are together and how happy they can be. But both of
them have emotional baggage that makes it difficult for them to believe the
other would want more than their temporary marriage.
I got frustrated with both because neither communicated
well with the other, leading to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Matters
became more complicated when Phoebe's brother showed up, trying to convince Phoebe
to return to England. George was manipulative in his attempt to get his way and
zoomed in on Max's insecurities. He also knew which buttons to push to get Phoebe
to react in the way he wanted. Both Max and Phoebe have some self-examination
to do before they can let go of the past. I loved the advice that Max got from
his friends and what he did with it. At the same time, we get to see how Phoebe's
relationship with Max has changed her. There is a terrific scene with George,
and later her grandmother, that shows off the new Phoebe. Max's big moment was
fantastic, and I loved seeing them work things out.
The epilogue was terrific. Seeing all three couples and
catching up on their lives was great.

Their Fairy Tale India Escape - Ruby Basu (HR #4889 - Feb 2024)
Series: If the Fairy Tale Fits (Book 3)
A CHANCE TO LET HER HAIR DOWN!
Rina longs for independence, but she's indebted to the
overprotective aunt who raised her. When tycoon Connor arrives to acquire her
family's company, she sees an opportunity to escape with him on a business trip
to India. Their desire ignites the second they arrive! Yet Rina soon learns
that commitment-phobe Connor's life is as complicated as hers. Can the spark
between them last beyond their temporary adventure?
Interesting Rapunzel-style romance. Rina's parents died
when she was ten, so her Aunt Maria raised her. Rina and Maria are the only
family each other has, and Maria has become super protective of Rina. They
rarely leave their small Swiss town, though Rina longs to travel. Rina and
Maria own a company that is famous for its haircare products. Rina is the
developer of these products. I ached for Rina. She feels guilty about her need
to get away because she loves her aunt and wants to keep her happy.
Connor arrives in their town to talk to Maria about
acquiring her company. He travels constantly for his work, bringing back
unpleasant childhood memories. His
father couldn't keep a job, so they were continually moving. If Connor successfully
acquires this company, he will have earned a promotion that allows him to limit
his travels.
Connor and Rina met accidentally several days before his
scheduled meeting with Maria. They have an immediate connection, but Rina is a
little wary since she has limited experience with strangers. But she is also friendly
and adventurous, so she offers to show Connor around the area. Connor is drawn
to Rina's joy in everything she experiences. There are sparks of attraction
that both attempt to ignore. A relationship between them is impossible. Connor won't
allow himself to get close to anyone, preferring to protect himself. Rina knows
that her place is with her aunt. Both are shocked when they discover they are
connected through the business, which endangers their connection.
When Rina finds out Connor's next stop is India, her
mother's birthplace, she is determined to accompany him. Connor is less than
enthusiastic, as he is having enough trouble resisting his attraction to her. It
was fun to see Rina's determination against Connor's resistance - it was pretty
obvious what the outcome would be. I loved their time in India. Rina learned
about her past, Connor experienced a different perspective on traveling, and
both learned a little about themselves. Their attraction continued to grow, but
along with it was a feeling that hoping for more was impossible. I hurt for
them both when the trip was over, and they had to part.
The following weeks and months were difficult as Connor
and Rina came to terms with their feelings and tried to find their way to the
future. Friendship was possible, but not enough for what they both felt. I
liked watching Rina stretch her wings as her relationship with her aunt
changed. Connor also took some surprising steps that altered his life. I loved
his big moment at the end. It was sweet, romantic and emotional. The epilogue
was a terrific follow-up with a peek into their lives a few years later.

Last Chance Investigation - Tara Taylor Quinn (HRS #2252 - Nov 2023)
Series: Sierra's Web (Book 12)
Haunted by his last case…
And his first love!
When a message in a bottle points to the possible copycat
case of a just-solved crime, Detective Levi Griggs is determined to find
closure and the potential new victim. Even if at the case's center lies Kelly
Chase -- the woman who shattered his heart.
Renowned psychiatrist Kelly certainly doesn't expect to
find herself pursuing a mystery with the high school love she left behind. But
as she and Levi untangle the past, they're running out of time in the present…
Good book with an unusual storyline. Levi was the
detective who solved a fifteen-year-old case, ending the life of a man who had
kept a woman prisoner for many years. Unfortunately, the man killed his victim
before Levi could free her and shot Levi. As the book opens, Levi is recovering
from his injury and dealing with the guilt he feels about the victim's death. He's
surprised when the sheriff shows up with a new clue like the ones in the case
he just closed. He's stunned when he finds out who discovered it.
Kelly returned to Idlewood for the first time in thirteen
years to clean out and sell the cabin she inherited from her grandparents. She
has mixed feelings about the house, many tied up in the memories of her high
school boyfriend, Levi. Kelly left the town and Levi behind when she went to
college and pursued her dream. Now, she is a psychiatrist who works with law
enforcement in Arizona. The last thing she expected was to get involved in chasing
a mystery with Levi.
This was an intriguing story. As Levi and Kelly get into
the investigation, they explore multiple possibilities. The notes could be from
a copycat, with another victim hidden in the hills. It could be a stalker
focused on Kelly, either by chance or as retribution for a case she has worked
on before. It could be another victim reaching out for help. Levi and Kelly
have differing ideas of who it is and must keep their minds open as they work
together to uncover the truth. The conclusion had a twist I didn't see coming
and had me on the edge of my seat until it was over.
I enjoyed watching the rekindling of Levi and Kelly's
relationship. Neither had forgotten the other, and their chemistry was evident
from the moment they met. However, Kelly has her life and career far from small
town Idlewood, and Levi has never wanted to live elsewhere. They couldn't deny
the attraction that still flared between them or the connection they felt. Both
fight their feelings, knowing nothing can come of it. I liked seeing them get
to know each other as adults, and especially liked Levi's growing respect for
Kelly's abilities. I ached for them both when the case was over, knowing they
each had lives that were far apart. I loved the ending and their plan for the future.
And his first love!

How to Tame a King – Juliette Hyland (HR #4906 – June 2024)
Series: Royals in the Headlines (Book 2)
A QUEEN BY CHANCE!
When Breanna steps in for her twin to become the king's
convenient bride, she's confident of her plan to escape their arrangement. But
her attraction to dutiful, guarded Sebastian throws a wrench into the works!
Sebastian's only priority is to his people, but stunning Breanna challenges him
to be both -- a man and a king. Can she tame single-minded Sebastian, and show
him there could be more to their royal marriage…?
Good marriage-of-convenience story. Sebastian needs a
wife, and his one attempt ended badly when he realized the woman he cared for
was more interested in his crown than in him. Rather than try for a love match,
he plans to pick someone who wants to be a queen from the leftovers of his
brother's bride lottery and treat it as a professional relationship. So he
picks a name from a hat and heads off to propose.
Breanna and her twin sister, Anastasia, are the daughters
of wealthy and very controlling parents. The women have plans for their lives
outside the advantageous marriages their parents want for them. Though Breanna
is the younger of the two, she has the steel will and a plan to get them out
from under their parents' thumbs. Those plans derail when Sebastian arrives
with his proposal to marry Anastasia. Breanna, who is very protective of her
sister, offers herself instead since the sisters are interchangeable according
to their parents. This will enable Breanna to help Anastasia escape and pursue
her dreams.
The first meeting between Sebastian and Breanna is a
little awkward. Sebastian knows nothing about the woman he picked, and Breanna
knows it. She is determined to save her sister and does a great job of making
her point that she is an easy substitute for Anna. She believes that the length
of a typical royal engagement will give her time to find a way out of the
marriage so she can pursue her dreams. Imagine her shock when Sebastian states
that their wedding will occur in three days!
Sebastian has a preconceived idea of what Breanna expects
from their marriage and has no idea that all of his knowledge comes from her
parents. The beginning of their married life is awkward because of it until they
begin to get to know each other. Breanna is surprised to learn that Sebastian
has been in training for his position since he was ten years old. She's
horrified by how his father taught him that his life belongs to the country and
that he doesn't rate a personal life. I enjoyed seeing her attempts to break
him free of his self-imposed restraints. I liked Sebastian's protectiveness
toward Breanna. He does a lovely job of standing up for her against her parents
on their wedding day, shocking Breanna. She never felt like she mattered to
anyone before that point.
I liked seeing Sebastian and Breanna get to know each
other. Neither expected the sparks of attraction that flared between them, and
each discovered that they wanted more from their marriage than just a royal partner.
I laughed out loud when Breanna put her foot down and cleared Sebastian's
schedule so he would have a vacation. I loved it when he overheard her talking to
her sister about her dream honeymoon and immediately changed his plans to make
hers a reality. The time they spent away gave them the chance they needed to
explore their growing feelings.
They hit a bump in their road when Sebastian makes a
boneheaded mistake regarding her hobby. His intentions were good, but the
results were not what he had hoped. It takes honest conversation and looking at
things from the other person's perspective to get past the hurt and anger. I
loved his big moment at the end. It was emotional and sweet. The epilogue was
good and showed Sebastian and Breanna a year later. I loved seeing the
difference in their lives.
I detested Breanna's parents and their attitude towards
their daughters. I hope they got exactly what they had coming to them.
